1 – Save the Zambezi – Batoka Gorge threatened by huge dam Back in April we shared updated plans on the devastating project which is seeking to dam the world famous Batoka Gorge. The Zambezi has a very special place in the heart of the IRF. This article shares the impacts on the local communities from a river user point of view |
2 – What to wear white water rafting First time novice or seasoned raft guide? What we wear on the river can make the biggest differences to our enjoyment and safety on the river |
3 – More rafters = less river rubbish The Mitake Canyon is home to the Mitake Cup (raft and kayak race) but also home to some very active energies to save and restore the river through the removal of rubbish. Removing rubbish is being touted as an activity to do on each and every rafting trip – not just for the race event |
4 – 67 teams met for the Russian national selections Proving that Russia can (sort of) move mountains, the national selections took place with a whopping 67 teams in attendance! The key difference to this event was the limited number of spectators |
5 – Registration is open for Virtual Youth Festival In the latter part of 2020, the IRF took part in the United Through Sport Virtual Youth Festival with two of our very own raft race judges helping out on the international stage. The festival was open to youth across the globe in a wide range of activities accessible to all – and able to compete virtually! |
6 – Rafting Books – good reads With all the lockdowns around the globe, we shared our top good reads all based on rivers and rafting. The list is 25+ already and we hope to add to the list with your suggestions |
7 – Gratitude and fond farewell to Raewyn After eleven years with us, Raewyn has moved on from her role administrating the world renowned IRF GTE system. We took a quick look back at those years and where we have come to through Raewyn’s help and dedication |
8 – A Boater’s Guide to Carabiners Earlier in 2020, we thought it might be good to share some rafting tips and tricks with you. This Rafting Magazine article was the most popular one of the series |

Annalee Decker shared her experiences with us and is now a regular contributor to our social media and blog |
10 – IRF joins global family of International Sports Federations The IRF joined other leading international sports federations to participate in a number of virtual meetings, forums and assemblies focused on the future of international sports. These virtual sessions occurred in late 2020 and were hosted by SportAccord, Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), Alliance of Independent Members of Sport (AIMS) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) |
