Who Can Apply?
This course is open to experienced, motivated guides who want to take the next step in their career. To qualify, you must:
✅ Hold a valid IRF Trip Leader (TL) Award at the level you wish to instruct
✅ Have scored 4 or 5 points (‘good’ or ‘excellent’) in all TL assessment tasks
✅ Have professional guiding experience in at least two different countries or states
✅ Be passionate about teaching students
✅ Be able to demonstrate all rafting skills at an expert level
✅ Hold a current Advanced First Aid certificate (minimum 16 hours including CPR)
Not sure if you qualify? If you hold a Trip Leader Award but need to improve your assessment scores, you can retake a Trip Leader evaluation before applying. If you don’t yet have a Trip Leader Award, you’ll need to complete one first.
What happens after the course and how do I obtain full Instructor status?
Upon successful completion, you’ll earn Provisional Instructor status. From there, you’ll be on the path to becoming a fully certified GTE Instructor – ready to train and inspire the next generation of river guides!

- Meet the prerequisites (see above)
- Attend an Instructor Training Course
- If successful, you will become a Provisional Instructor. There is a mandatory training period:
As a Provisional Instructor, you will need to assist and instruct on several (at least two) GTE Guide and / or Trip Leader workshops under the supervision of a certified GTE Instructor. Your Instructor Trainer will set the exact number of workshops you need to assist / instruct on. The workshops need to be at the level you want to certify for. - Final Instructor sign off:
As soon as you have completed the number of GTE workshops set by your Instructor Trainer and you feel ready, you can organise your final sign off as a GTE Instructor:- Find an Instructor Trainer to supervise the process
- Organise a GTE Raft Guide and Trip Leader workshop on the level you want to certify. This includes registering the workshop (so it appears on the website here), advertising the workshop, communication with GTE admin, running the workshop, collecting and paying GTE fees and the Instructor Trainer, and post workshop admin.
Obtaining final instructor sign off
The Instructor Trainer overseeing your final sign off must be a different Instructor Trainer than the one teaching your Instructor Training Course.

You will be responsible for finding an Instructor Trainer suitable for your final sign off, paying for their travel and lodging expenses and their Instructor Trainer day rate. The Instructor Trainer may be used as a second instructor on your workshop, however you must:
- demonstrate all the rafitng and rescue skills,
- all skills need to be demonstrated by you
- all logistics / admin work needs to be done by you
- site selection needs to be done by you
- safety needs to be organised by you
- all theory lessons need to be given by you
- feedback to students needs to be given by you
After completing the workshop, the Provisional Instructor can be signed off by the overseeing Instructor Trainer. Your final sign off must be within 24 months of completing your Instructor Training Course. The workshop for your final sign off must be at least three days and must include Raft Guide and Trip Leader assessments.
Costs
The price for the 5-day Instructor Training Course is €590 EUR per person. The price includes the training, accommodation, lunches and river logistics (shuttles).
If you successfully complete the Instructor training, there will be an additional $130 USD certification fee to obtain your Provisional Instructor Certificate.
